My Friends

I’ve been lucky enough to have made a lot of great friends over the years.  I think it’s a little unique to still have a lot of my high school friends as my best friends!  Most of my other best friends were made during my university years.  I think I’ll sort of model it after a neat page Jordan Dennis had years ago listing a bunch of friends and a little bit about them.  Anyway, I’ll continue updating this page as I have time, and do a little bio for each, it should be fun!

Jeff

Jeff Mah – born July 13, 1976  What can I say about Jeff?  We’ve been great friends since I moved to Sexsmith in the summer of 1990.  In fact he and Jim were two of the first people I met as a gangly 13 year old new-comer to the town… <starts to reminisce> Ah yes, Jeff would always open his home to us over lunch hour to play street hockey and super Nintendo.  He would also become a great source of computer game piracy throughout the early 1990’s.  We played on the high school volleyball and basketball teams together, as well as a (brief – 1 week?) stint on the Sexsmith Sabre football team.  Jeff and I had both similar and conflicting musical tastes however… I was never one for his Color Me BADD and Michael Bolton albums back in the 1990 (or were those his sister’s?), but he did formally introduce me to Eric Clapton, who we still admire today.  We also later became roomies for nearly 4 years in Edmonton as I continued on to the University of Alberta.  He continues to play basketball and tennis, and enjoys golf, Ultimate Frisbee, and a bunch of other summer sports with his Iomer gang.  Oh yeah, Iomer, or “Iomah” as he’d have it, is where Jeff works and applys his computer wizardry and project management.  To sum up, we’ve had a lot of good times over the years,  and he’s one of the best guys you’ll ever meet as anyone else will attest.

Ian Firlotte – born January 25, 1978  Ian is one half of the dynamic duo known as the Firlotte brothers.  He’s as clever as he is witty, and he’ll pull the wool over your eyes if you’re not careful!  I met Ian through Darcy’s nerdy card game parties when I lived with him, but I wouldn’t say Ian and I became good friends until the university years.  Ian’s passions are simple:  sports and video games.  When he’s not watching the Sacramento Kings or the LA Kings, he’s eating at the Burger King.  Ian truly is of royal lineage!  Seriously though, it’ll be tough come NBA/NHL season and MLB playoffs to not go over to Ian’s to watch him flip channels between games and keep me up to date on all internet fads and pop-culture goings-on – especially his YTMND’s.  Ian is an engineer and he works at Matrikon, though I’d say he spends more time chatting and reading ESPN than he does working – and he proved me right by submitting a comment on this blog during his working hours!

june04-049.jpgNick Firlotte – born December 29, 1979 After a bit of a “My Friends” hiatus, I’m back.  This is Nick’s time to shine!  He’s the other half the Firlotte duo, and a #1 Lindsay pal.  Nick and I became fast friends throughout the university years, and we’ve maintained that since, though it has been harder as he has been stationed on the other side of the world, in Bangkok Thailand (he works for the Canadian Embassy there).  When I wasn’t pointing out how he always wore that Prodigy T-shirt every Thursday in Economics 102, we were creating D-Fratt rap album concepts during accounting classes, TA-ing BUS201 at the U of A, and listening to (and creating our own) Arnie prank calls.  Ah, good times.  Nick is also quite a music connaisseur, and will lay claim to “introducing” me to a lot of music I still love today – thought NOT the Who, I was listening to them when Nicky was still in diapers.  If I was very careful not to damage them, he was very generous in lending me cd’s that I could copy and check out.  Like what?  Hrmm, Stereophonics, Bow-ie, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, The Smiths, Snow Patrol, and probably a host of others.  Oh yeah, and Nick was the inaugeral member of my post-redse7en band, Brandybuck.  He’s a great bass player and we had lots of fun acting half like a half indie, half U2 cover band.  We played a couple great shows together in 2002 and made our only album, “Forwards From Fall” with singer Matty Stanton and drummer Mark Puttick.  Anyway, I could go on and on of funny stories and inside jokes that we have, but suffice to say Nick is a great buddy.

Don’t hold back, my birthday is on January 25 and yes I am currently at work…

  2. Troy Says:

I don’t recall giving either express written or even implied oral consent to put my image r name on the internet.

  3. Nick Says:

So many things to say, so I made a list:
    1. Great bass player? What are those chords again? Good times, indeed.
    2. I miss that Prodigy shirt, but not as much as the U-boat sweater.
    3. I can’t believe you used that picture with “fat Nick”. Bah, we look good anyway.
    4. Don’t scratch my CDs.

  4. ***RE: Nick’s comments***
    1. OK, good bass player. And you learned those chords eventually (I’m a good teacher – ya’ll be wearing gold plated diapers!). You made up for it in pure guts.
    2. U-boat sweater = best “going out on Whyte” article of clothing of all time. I will find something similar someday. Did that have a turtle-neck?
    3. Of course we look good! I have pictures of “fatter” Nick circa 1997, so be thankful! :)
    4. I swear, that was Darcy who scratched it, not me!!!

  5. It’s a lot of work writing-up everyone you know, eh? ;-)
